This print is titled simply "Washington Monument," and its record dates it to March 4, 1844, though the catalog notes that the date comes from an unverified shelflist card. If the date is right, the image shows the obelisk while the project was still a fundraising effort. The Washington National Monument Society, a private group, had not yet laid the cornerstone, which happened in July 1848. The monument was not finished until 1884, so images from these early years often show the design as an idea on paper rather than a completed structure.
