Two riders sit astride their machines at the starting line of a motorcycle race near Boise, Idaho, while a pair of attendants steady the bikes beside them. The picture dates to around 1911, a time when motorcycles were still new and racing drew large crowds to dirt tracks and open country roads across the American West. Many early motorcycles had few gears and no electric starters, so the men holding the frames were a practical necessity as much as spectators. The scene captures the rough, hands-on character of early motorsport before standardized courses and safety rules took hold.
