A chromolithograph label titled *Warpath*, printed around 1885, was made to sell tobacco, not to document Native life. Color lithography was cheap and widely used in the 1880s, and tobacco makers pasted such labels on packages and tins to catch the eye of buyers. Imagery of Native Americans was a popular choice in that trade, and images like this one drew on a romanticized frontier fantasy of warfare and the "vanishing" West rather than on the lives of the people depicted. Viewed today, the label is valuable as an example of how commercial art shaped public ideas about Indigenous people.
