What sets this poster apart is its pairing of Alsatian women with French soldiers and the tricolor, a reference to Alsace, which Germany had held since 1871. Issued in 1918, the Emprunt de la Libération was a French war bond campaign that asked citizens to lend money to the state in the final months of the First World War. Henri Royer signed the lithograph, and three related versions of the design exist, differing slightly in size and in the text along the bottom border. Posters like this one used patriotic imagery to make buying bonds feel like a civic duty.
