This poster asks French readers to subscribe to the Liberation Loan of 1918, and its subject is a woman from Alsace, one of the region's regional markers appearing alongside French military figures and the tricolor. The loan drew on a theme that resonated strongly in 1918: Alsace and Lorraine, lost to Germany in 1871, were the territories France hoped to recover. Public war loans like this one were a major way the French state financed the war, and posters such as this, signed by Henri Royer, were designed to make that financial appeal feel patriotic and personal.
