Few posters on this board tie so closely to a specific place. This 1918 color lithograph pairs French soldiers and a flag with women of Alsace, the province whose return to France was a central goal of the war. Signed by Henri Royer, it promoted the Emprunt de la Libération, or Liberation Loan, a French government bond drive that asked ordinary citizens to lend money to the state. Posters like this were a major tool of wartime finance, turning patriotic feeling into subscriptions. The record notes three other printed versions of the design, which differ slightly in size and in the text along the bottom border.
