A whole-plate daguerreotype from October 1852 is still in its plain leather case, with a label inside bearing the name of Julia Germain Prime. Among the sitters is Edward Irenaeus Prime, who lived only from 1847 to 1849, so the portrait also preserves the memory of a child the family lost young. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, producing a sharp, mirror-like image that shows best when tilted against the light. By 1852 the process was giving way to paper-based photography, and a sitting like this one was a costly, carefully arranged keepsake.
