The statue in view is the Lafayette monument in Lafayette Square, directly across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, which made it a natural gathering place for protest. The photograph is dated to about 1916, when the woman suffrage campaign was pressing President Woodrow Wilson for a federal amendment. Suffragists soon moved to daily silent vigils at the White House gates, a tactic that drew wide attention and, eventually, arrests. The print was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington studio that documented the city's public life for decades. Its date and details come from an old caption card, so they are worth checking against other sources.
