A funeral gondola is the detail that sets this picture apart from the many Venice views on the board: a black, enclosed barge rather than the open gondolas that carry tourists along the canals. In Venice, such hearses were used to carry the dead across the lagoon and along the waterways to the island cemetery of San Michele, where the city has buried its residents for centuries. The caption card gives no date, so the photograph's exact moment is uncertain, but the subject reflects a long tradition of water-borne funerals that visitors of the period often sought out and recorded. Its title and the subject tracings point to the ritual rather than to a scene of everyday city life.
