Palm Park sits on the former exposition grounds in Port-au-Prince, where the city's public fairs were held, so the palms here stand on ground that once hosted crowds and national displays. The capital marked its bicentennial with a major exposition in 1949, and the fairgrounds afterward became a place for public gatherings and leisure. This ca. 1960 view records how the tall palms gave the open grounds a shaded, tropical character that the city's residents and visitors used for strolling and rest.
