Workers at Swift's Chicago packing house wash and tag freshly killed lamb, one step in a fast, heavily organized slaughter line. The picture is a stereograph, a card printed with two nearly identical photographs that produce a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope, and the H.C. White Company, a major stereograph publisher, issued it. Around 1906, Chicago's meatpacking plants faced intense public scrutiny, and Upton Sinclair's novel *The Jungle* that year exposed unsanitary conditions in the industry, helping prompt federal meat inspection legislation. The date and details come from an old caption card and may have been revised since.
