Workers at Swift's packing house in Chicago are shown in the middle of the beef line, stripping hides from carcasses and splitting backbones, the kind of labor that made the city's stockyards famous around 1906. The stereograph was produced by the H.C. White Company, a firm known for paired views sold to parlors and schools, so the scene was meant to be studied in three dimensions. Chicago's meatpacking plants processed enormous numbers of cattle and drew national attention to the city's industrial scale, and the picture offers a close look at the physical, hands-on work behind that reputation.
