A glass negative of Roosevelt crossing the Paranapanema River shows him on one of his journeys in South America, not his years in Washington. The caption places the scene in Minas, but the river runs through São Paulo and Paraná, so the location is worth treating with caution. Roosevelt made the trip in 1913 and 1914, after leaving the presidency, and joined Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon on an expedition through largely unmapped interior country. The picture came through the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose glass-plate work documents much of the news photography of that period.
