This is a portrait of Albert G. Schmedeman, though the record's title comes from caption cards and negative sleeves that the Bain News Service supplied, and the library has not verified the identification. The image survives as a glass negative, a format that was standard for press photographs in the early twentieth century and that captured fine detail, though it also made the plates fragile and easy to lose. The Bain News Service, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of public figures, events and everyday life, so a portrait from its files was likely made for publication. Without a date, the sitter's role can only be inferred from the agency's general practice.
