Catalogued under the name Cyril Maude, this glass negative records a portrait of the English actor who built much of his career on the London stage and later worked in the United States. Maude managed the Haymarket theater in London for several years around the turn of the twentieth century and became well known to American audiences through touring and Broadway appearances. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied press pictures to newspapers in the early 1900s, made images like this one for publication. The title comes from the agency's own notes, which are unverified, so the sitter's identity should be treated with some caution.
