The sitter is recorded as Edw. Kellogg Baird, though the Library of Congress notes that this name comes from unverified caption data, and no date is given. The picture survives as a single glass negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, part of the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain's New York agency supplied newspapers with news photographs in the early twentieth century, so portraits like this one were usually made to be printed and circulated quickly, with identifying details kept on accompanying caption cards.
