This glass negative carries the caption "Tuan Chi-Jui," the Wade-Giles spelling of Duan Qirui, a leading military and political figure in the Beiyang government in Peking during China's warlord era. He served several terms as premier in the late 1910s, a period of intense rivalry among regional military factions. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied images of newsworthy people and events to American newspapers in these years. The record gives no date, and the identification comes from the caption cards, so it is worth treating the name as provisional until it can be checked against other sources.
