This negative is catalogued under the name Louis Libby, a title taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote out itself, and the record does not confirm who the man was or when the picture was taken. The Bain agency, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain in the early 1900s, sold news photographs to newspapers, so its portraits were usually made to be printed and captioned quickly. Its glass plates, often no larger than 5 by 7 inches, record the look of that working press photography, and the sharpness and tonal range of a glass negative are worth noticing in any print made from one.
