The Northern Pacific Transcontinental Express was one of the great passenger trains of the late nineteenth century, and this illustration shows it in the kind of scene railroads loved to advertise: a locomotive and carriages moving through open country, with the emphasis on speed and comfort. The line ran west from the Great Lakes toward the Pacific Northwest, and it carried tourists toward the Yellowstone region, which the railroad promoted heavily to eastern travelers. Images like this one helped sell the idea that a transcontinental journey could be both swift and civilized, and they remain a useful record of how railroads presented themselves to the public.
