Page 59 of a Northern Pacific Railway promotional book carries engravings of waterfalls, placing this picture among the illustrated guides that the railroad used to draw travelers to Yellowstone. Northern Pacific ran the main rail line into the park's gateway at Livingston, Montana, and its publications pitched the falls and canyons as scenery within easy reach of a train ride. Printed engravings like these were made to be copied and reproduced cheaply, so they reached a wide readership before photographs could be reproduced in print as easily. Look closely at the fine line work, which was the engraver's way of rendering water spray and rock texture.
