This page is from a Northern Pacific Railway promotional booklet, and its geyser illustrations show the features that drew tourists to Yellowstone. The railroad reached the park's gateway at Livingston, Montana, in 1883, and it published illustrated guides like this one to persuade travelers to take the train west and then the stagecoach or tour coach into the park. Pages like this one, with engravings of geysers and hot springs, were meant to make a distant and unfamiliar landscape seem both reachable and worth the trip. They also show how railroad advertising shaped the public image of the park as a place of natural wonders.
