Dining cars like this one were the most polished part of a long rail journey, and this Northern Pacific interior shows a table dressed in white linen with a waiter attending to it. The scene reflects how railroads of the period competed on comfort, using formal service to set themselves apart from rivals. Northern Pacific carried many travelers toward Yellowstone, whose geysers and canyons drew visitors from across the country. Notice the fittings and tableware, which show how much effort went into making a meal feel refined far from any city.
