This map shows the Northern Pacific's network of leased and connecting lines, the routes the company held through leases and agreements rather than owned outright. The railroad ran across the northern tier of the country and completed its transcontinental line in 1883, when the last spike was driven at Gold Creek, Montana. Northern Pacific also became one of the main routes into Yellowstone, and its promotion of the park helped turn the region into a national destination. Viewed alongside the park materials on this board, the map shows how a rail network could shape which landscapes people were able to reach.
