This map sets aside the park's scenery to trace the rail network that carried travelers toward it, showing the Northern Pacific's leased lines and the connections that tied them to other carriers. The railroad was among the most active promoters of Yellowstone to eastern visitors, and its branch to Gardiner, completed in 1903, gave tourists a direct route to the park's northern entrance. Maps like this served as both planning aids and advertising, showing how a single journey could bring passengers from distant cities to the park's edge.
