John Muir, the naturalist and early advocate for Yosemite and other western wilderness, sits for this oval portrait, which is marked as the work of a photographer named Edw. Hughes. Oval-framed portraits like this were a common format in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when studio sittings were popular with public figures and their admirers. Muir's writing and campaigning helped lead to Yosemite's designation as a national park in 1890, and images of him like this one helped put a human face on the conservation movement he championed.
