Few places in the American West drew photographers as early and as persistently as Yosemite Valley, and this view of a waterfall tumbling above a rocky stream shows why. The sepia tone is typical of the period's albumen and toned prints, which gave the granite walls and falling water a warm, softened look. Yosemite was set aside by Congress in 1864 as a protected grant, and photographers such as Carleton Watkins helped convince a wider public that its waterfalls and cliffs were worth seeing and preserving. Look closely at the rocks in the foreground to see how the stream has carved its path through the stone.
