Herbert Hoover appears here fishing, a pastime he pursued whenever his official duties allowed. The picture is dated to about 1929, the year he took office as the 31st president, though the title comes from unverified information the National Photo Company recorded on the negative. Hoover was an avid angler who often fished the Rapidan River near his camp in Virginia, and the company's Washington studio documented many public figures at leisure. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating, which adds to its worn, historic texture.
