Hernando de Soto's men reached the Mississippi River in May 1541, and this Currier & Ives lithograph of 1876 pictures that moment as a grand European discovery. The expedition had landed in Florida in 1539 and wandered through the Southeast for nearly three years in search of gold that was never found. De Soto died of fever in 1542 on the river's banks, and his followers sank his body in the water so that Native peoples would not recover it. Printed in New York during the nation's centennial year, the scene reflects how popular illustrators of the period told early exploration as part of the country's origin story.
