This map sets out the full national reach of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, a line that began as a short route in Kansas and grew into one of the largest systems in the West. Maps like this one were usually more than geography. Railroads used them to advertise routes, connect towns to markets, and draw settlers and investors to land near their tracks. Look at how the lines fan out from Kansas toward the Southwest and the Pacific coast, which shows the company's ambitions as clearly as the terrain.
