Marbled paper, not a photograph, is the first thing to notice here: its maroon, pink and blue swirls were made by floating inks on a bath of size and then drawing a comb or stylus through them before laying a sheet of paper on top. Decorative marbled papers were long used for endpapers, bookbinding and box linings, and American printers and binders made their own versions well into the nineteenth century. The pattern is a record of a hand-process, so each sheet differs slightly from the next, and the soft, feathered edges of the colors show how the inks spread on the water.
