The gold embossed lettering sets this cover apart from the engravings inside the book it fronts. Picturesque America was a multivolume survey published in the early 1870s, assembled from landscape views and written descriptions of the country's rivers, mountains, towns and coastlines. Its cover was meant to signal a luxury product, since gilt-stamped cloth and raised lettering were favored by publishers of illustrated volumes for parlor display. Look closely at the tooling and you can see how the designers pulled the eye toward the title before a reader ever opened the pages.
