The subject here is a Native settlement, a less common focus than the riverboats and bluffs that usually fill Currier & Ives's views of the Mississippi. New York publisher Currier & Ives produced many such scenic lithographs in the second half of the nineteenth century, and hand-coloring gave them a painterly finish that appealed to buyers who would never see the river themselves. Prints like this reflected a public appetite for western scenery, but they often presented Native people through a romantic and sometimes inaccurate lens. Today they are valuable as much for what they reveal about popular taste as for what they show of the village.
