This color woodcut shows a group of children marching in a parade, each playing a hand drum, a detail that sets it apart from many images of children at play. It dates to about 1875, early in the Meiji period, when Japan was rapidly reorganizing its government and society after centuries of Tokugawa rule. Woodblock prints of this era often recorded everyday street life, seasonal events, and popular entertainment for a broad urban audience. Such scenes give a sense of how children's games and neighborhood processions looked during a time of quick change.
