The title, 歸去來圖 (*Guiqulai tu*, "Returning Home"), refers to Tao Yuanming's famous fifth-century poem about leaving an official post to return to a simple rural homestead. This page follows that theme with children waiting at a thatched gateway, a plain image of domestic welcome. Japanese printmakers and book illustrators often drew on Chinese literary subjects like this, using them to suggest scholarly taste and a retreat from public life. Look at how the block carves the thatch and the open gate, which set the mood of quiet homecoming.
