A heavy run of chain, its links dark with age and grime, is the focus of this 1974 gelatin silver print of the Boston Naval Shipyard in Charlestown. The photographs were commissioned by the Charlestown Preservation Society and made between March and August of that year, when the yard was winding down after nearly two centuries of shipbuilding and repair. Chains like these were everyday working gear, used to haul, moor, and secure vessels, so the picture records the tools of the trade as well as the decaying industrial setting. The print is one of a limited edition of 250 and was acquired by the Library of Congress in 1975.
