The engraving shows the British departure from Boston on March 17, 1776, one of the first major American victories of the Revolution. It was cut by F.T. Stuart from a drawing by L. Hollis and published in Abbott's *Lives of the Presidents*. British forces had held the city since 1775, but the Continental Army's cannon on Dorchester Heights threatened the fleet in the harbor, and General William Howe chose to sail for Halifax rather than fight for the town.
