From the high ground of Dorchester Heights, this bird's-eye aquatint takes in Boston's harbor and waterfront as they looked around 1841. The hill is best known for March 1776, when Continental troops under George Washington fortified it overnight with artillery that threatened the British fleet, and the redcoats soon sailed out of Boston. Robert Havell, an English-born engraver known for his plates for Audubon's *Birds of America*, engraved and colored the view in New York.
