The Dorchester Heights Monument is a granite obelisk on the hilltop in South Boston, and this drawing sets out its architectural plans and elevations. The hill is where American forces under George Washington placed artillery in March 1776, overlooking the British position in Boston. That move forced the British to evacuate the city, and the monument commemorates the event. Its construction, completed in 1902, reflects the early twentieth-century interest in marking Revolutionary War sites, so the drawings show a design meant to be read as both memorial and landmark.
