The West Monument Elevation is a drawing of the western face of the Dorchester Heights Monument, the granite obelisk that stands on the hill in South Boston. The hill was fortified by Continental forces in March 1776, when Henry Knox's cannon, hauled from Fort Ticonderoga, were placed here overlooking the British garrison in Boston. The British evacuated the city shortly afterward, and the monument, completed in 1902, was built to commemorate that event. Elevation drawings like this one show the monument's flat, measured profile, with each tier and inscription recorded as it would appear from directly in front.
