The drawing shows the south face of the tower itself, laid out flat, so its proportions and stonework can be read without the distortion of a photograph. The monument commemorates Dorchester Heights, where Continental forces under George Washington fortified the high ground in March 1776. The artillery that made the position possible had been hauled overland from Fort Ticonderoga, and the threat it posed led the British to abandon Boston soon after. An elevation like this shows how the memorial was meant to look at its full height.
