Ships and small boats crowd the water in this hand-colored engraving of the British departure from Boston on March 17, 1776, when Royal forces sailed away after a long siege. The withdrawal followed the Continental Army's occupation of Dorchester Heights, where cannon hauled from Fort Ticonderoga overlooked the harbor and the British fleet. Engravings like this one were often colored by hand and sold to a public eager to see the first major American victory of the Revolution. Dorchester Heights is now part of Boston National Historical Park.
