In 1876, Wellesley College was only a year old as a college, having opened its doors in 1875 on a wooded estate beside Lake Waban in the town of Wellesley, about 12 miles west of Boston. The institution was founded by Henry Durant, a Boston lawyer, who meant it to offer young women a education equal to what men received at Harvard and Yale. Its main building, a large Victorian structure, stood on a rise above the lake and gave the new school a commanding presence in a town that had been mostly farmland and small mills. The Boston and Albany Railroad ran nearby, making the campus reachable for students from across New England and beyond. For the families who sent their daughters there, Wellesley was a bold experiment in women's higher learning, and the surrounding countryside still felt remote from the city.
