Donavin's Original Tennesseans was billed on this lithograph as performing its fifth annual tour, with 118 consecutive concerts in New York and Brooklyn. The poster pairs that claim with individual portraits of the performers, signed by F. Friedlein, Fleming, or the Photo Engraving Company of New York. Its subject headings place the troupe within the minstrel tradition, in which Black performers were often presented through white-devised stage conventions, so the sheet works as both an advertisement and a record of how such acts were marketed. The title's "slave cabin singers" reflects the plantation imagery these shows relied on, and the Tennessee gallery board refers to the troupe's name rather than to where it performed.
