Printed under the title "Liberty Enlightening the World," this chromolithograph uses the statue's official name, which Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi chose for the copper figure France gave the United States. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886, on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor, and its tablet is inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence in Roman numerals. Color posters like this one circulated widely in the decades around the dedication, turning the statue into a familiar emblem of immigration and national identity. Look for how the printer rendered the green patina that the copper skin would develop over time, since the statue first appeared bright copper.
