Few houses in the capital are tied to a single name as closely as the one at Sixth and E Streets Northwest, which is linked to Salmon P. Chase. Chase served as Treasury Secretary under Abraham Lincoln, overseeing the greenback currency and the creation of the national banking system during the Civil War, and he later became Chief Justice of the United States. This photograph records the building's facade sometime between 1900 and 1950, so it shows the house as it appeared decades after Chase's death in 1873. Its exact date is uncertain, so it is best read as a document of the building itself.
