The Ebbitt House stood at the corner of 14th and F streets Northwest, one of the best-known hotels in downtown Washington during the early twentieth century. Its location put it steps from the White House and the offices of federal government, so it drew politicians, lobbyists, visiting businessmen and out-of-town travelers. Hotels of this kind were central to the life of the capital, serving as meeting places for the city's commercial and political circles. The picture dates from roughly 1900 to 1920, a period when the district was growing quickly and its downtown streetscape was changing with the arrival of new office buildings and streetcar traffic.
