This photograph shows the Salmon P. Chase house in the Edgewood section of Washington, D.C., a building tied to one of the city's best-known 19th-century officeholders. Chase served as Treasury Secretary under Abraham Lincoln, where he helped establish the national banking system and the greenback currency during the Civil War, and he later became Chief Justice of the United States, presiding over the Senate impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson in 1868. Because the picture was likely made decades after Chase's death in 1873, it shows how the house looked to twentieth-century observers who remembered his public career.
