Harold H. Chase, a first baseman for the New York American League club in 1911, is the single player at the center of this portrait. That year the team was still known as the Highlanders, a name it kept until it became the Yankees in 1913. The American League had only become a major league in 1901, and by 1911 it was a serious rival to the National League, with fans eager to put faces to the names in the newspapers. Chase was regarded as one of the best fielders of his time, though his later career was clouded by accusations of throwing games.
