Shown with his tray of wares, this photoprint presents a peddler of shoe strings, one of the many small trades that filled New York's sidewalks in the 1890s. Elizabeth Alice Austen, a Staten Island photographer, made the image and copyrighted it as a photoprint. Street sellers of cheap goods such as laces and notions were a familiar sight in the crowded city, and Austen's series of "street types" recorded the working people who sold on its corners. The date of about 1896 comes from a caption card and is unverified, so it should be read with that caveat in mind.
