A young messenger boy poses with his bicycle in this c1896 photoprint, one of a series titled "Street types of New York City" that the Staten Island photographer Elizabeth Alice Austen copyrighted. The bicycle was a common tool for telegraph and delivery messengers in the 1890s, when the bicycle craze had put wheels on city streets and made quick errands a job for boys. The catalog tags the picture under child labor as well as occupations, which points to the era's debates over young workers in the city. The record notes that its details come from an unverified caption card, so the boy's identity and exact location remain uncertain.
